History of Zionsville

Zionsville began as a promotion by William Zion, a railway speculator who built a railway station on Elijah Cross' land.  The town became chartered in 1852, and by the end of the decade had accumulated a population of 364.  In 1861, Abraham Lincoln made a speech in what is now known as Lincoln Park.  Zionsville obtained a reputation as a cultural center in the late 1800's when B.F. Clark opened up a hall with a stage.  Many noted entertainers and orators appeared on this stage, including Susan B. Anthony and James Whitcomb Riley.
